6th WCRP International Conference on Reanalysis

28 October - 1 November 2024
Ito International Research Center
The University of Tokyo, Japan

The 6th WCRP International Conference on Reanalysis (ICR6) was successfully concluded with over 200 participants from 30 countries and regions worldwide.
Overall the oral and poster presentations as well as the active panel discussion provided us with extensive knowledge and new insight. Compared to the previous conference, we recognize the even more increasing importance of reanalysis production and applications from operational, scientific, and social perspectives.
The IPC members, session chairs, and rapporteurs will continue working together to summarize the outcome of this conference. A summary of ICR6 will be submitted to the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS).
Thank you very much for joining us at ICR6. We look forward to seeing you all again at the next conference.

Conference Overview

The Sixth WCRP International Conference on Reanalysis (ICR6) will take place in Tokyo from 28th October to 1st November 2024 under initiatives from the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the Japan Meteorological Agency, “Climate change actions with co-creation powered by Regional weather information and E-technology” (ClimCORE), and the University of Tokyo.

Reanalyses are digital datasets that represent the evolution of the Earth’s climate system to date, enabling us to put current extreme weather events into a climatic context for diagnosis, revisit past climate events and monitor long-term changes in the climate system. There have been continued efforts to improve data quality and to include not only the atmosphere but also other Earth system components (e.g., land, ocean and cryosphere). Demands for higher resolution and quality have become a driving force of regional reanalysis. Today’s rapid development in artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) has been creating new opportunities for even wider application of reanalysis data.

ICR6 will bring together reanalysis producers, observation data providers, numerical modelers and members of the user community to discuss progress, challenges and future priorities in the field. The ultimate aim is to guide the development and use of reanalysis data in science, public services, policy making and social/economic activity.

The conference will focus on:

  • Global reanalysis production status/plans
  • Regional reanalysis production status/plans
  • Observations for reanalyses
  • Methods for reanalyses
  • Production of reanalyses
  • Evaluations of reanalyses
  • Applications of reanalyses in science and society
  • Exploration of machine learning (ML) approaches in the context of reanalysis

Abstracts can be submitted online from January 2024 to April 2024.
